Description
For flute, clarinet, trumpet in C, violin, and piano. As a young graffiti artist Basquiat would often write "BUILD A FORT, SET THAT ON FIRE". This describes perfectly what I do with much of my music; build a musical structure that explodes, disintegrates, and blazes into something unexpected. It's also a perfect instruction to musicians; to go through the paces, but also let go of what we thought essential in favor of those vibrant ideas that come out of nowhere. This piece began with the idea of virtuosity; not showing off, but something more difficult requiring total concentration and coordination between players, who must build the fort, but also be confident enough to set the whole thing on fire when the time comes. — Missy Mazzoli
