Es geht wohl anders... (2.5 minutes, 1936)
composed by Walter Arlen, on text by
Josef von Eichendorff (translation by Exilarte)
Composer note
Es geht wohl anders was written in April, 1938 to a poem in German by Josef von Eichendorff [1788-1857], in Vienna, while still living in our apartment above the family department store. When I wrote the music for this song, my father was imprisoned in the Karajangasse [Nazi prison in a school building. Inmates were usually transported on to Dachau]; my mother, after a nervous breakdown, was under suicide watch in the mental hospital, ‘Heilanstalt Helia.’ How prophetic Eichendorff’s words were.
— Walter Arlen
