Duration: ca. 4 minutes)

Text: English, by the composer

Daniel Catán's unfinished opera is based on the 1941 American film Meet John Doe starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film, directed and produced by Frank Capra, is about a “grassroots” political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist (Ann Mitchell). It became a box office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story. Though the film is less well known than other Frank Capra classics, it remains highly regarded today.

In the aria, Ann Mitchell explains what she’ll do with her fictional character: “So he writes me a letter…and I dig him up, he pours out his soul to me, and from now on we quote him, ‘I protest against all evils in the world, the greed, the lust, the fear, the hate in man…’ ”

This is the aria from Act I Scene 3
