Composer note
String Quartet, Op. 8 was completed in March 1936 and first performed at the Yaddo Music Festival of 1936 by the Phil-Sym Quartet. It is in four movements: the first movement, marked Allegro, is in modified sonata-allegro form in that there are two contrasting themes with a development section and a recapitulation. The second movement, marked Scherzoso, is a scherzo in 6/8 meter, in a humorous vein, with varying rhythmic patterns, and muted throughout the entire movement. The third movement, marked Andante ecclesiastico, is in the style of Gregorian Chant but built on an original theme; the second theme is in metrical rhythmic contrast to the free rhythm of Gregorian Chant. The final movement, marked Fuga, is self-explanatory, except that the textbook rules on the fugue are not slavishly followed. In fact, in order to avoid writing an academic fugue, the movement was first written and the rules studied later.
