Blue Orchid was commissioned for the Rudolph Buchbinder Diabelli 2020 project, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
For Rudolf Buchbinder's recording of Beethoven's thirty-three variations on a simple waltz by Anton Diabelli (the 'Diabelli Variations' he composed between 1819 and 1823), Buchbinder added a few by Beethoven's contemporaries to the album. Notably, he also commissioned eleven more 21st-century composers to write variations for the recording, including Tan Dun's contemplative Blue Orchid.
