When she was thirty years old, Julian fell gravely ill and believed her death was imminent. As she lay sick, she had a series of visions (“shewings”) of Jesus, which she described in writing after her unexpected recovery.

I’m drawn to texts that tell of experiences that are right on the border between the religious and the erotic: I’ve explored this ambiguity in pieces like This Earth, which sets a tantalizing passage from Dante’s Purgatorio.

Julian’s Revelations goes to both extremes: it is intensely spiritual (Julian lived much of her life as an anchoress, confined to a small cell within a church so that she could devote herself entirely to worship) and also intensely physical. Her visions are sometimes gruesome: she witnesses blood trickling from Jesus’s wounds, and the decay of her Savior’s body. Her longing for Jesus and identification with him (“I would that His pains were my pains…I desired to suffer with Him”) is so intense that any theoretical boundary between the religious and the erotic is surely obliterated.

My musical setting takes a section from early in the Revelations, the section that recounts Julian’s illness, her belief that she is sure to die, and then her mysterious recovery. I happened to be exactly Julian’s age (“thirty years old and a half”) when I wrote the piece, and her account of her sickness felt disturbingly relevant, given that it was written during some of the bleakest months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I wrote this piece for my friends Theo Hoffman and Adam Nielsen, with the generous support of the New York Festival of Song.

— Matthew Aucoin

for piano

Movements
1. I have become fascinated in recent years by Dostoevsky’s prophetic novel Demons (which is still better known in English as The Possessed — an old and inaccurate translation of its title). Demons tells a story that feels all too relevant today: it’s a tale of the rise of nihilism within a complacent and unsuspecting society. Specifically, it deals with the way that the spiritual malaise of young, privileged, bored, lost young men can have deadly consequences.

Normally, when I write instrumental music, I don’t think in explicitly dramatic terms; the musical materials themselves contain plenty of drama! But in this case, unusually, I did start from specific images and moments within the story.

The work is cast in two movements. The first is inspired, broadly speaking, by the dynamic between the two tormented young nihilists at the novel’s center. There is also a hidden little setting of Pushkin’s poem “Demons,” which serves as the novel’s epigraph: “Upon my life the tracks have vanished / We’ve lost our way, what shall we do?”

The second movement was initially inspired by a chapter — suppressed by a censor in Dostoevsky’s lifetime — in which one of the protagonists visits a monk and confesses to having cruelly taken advantage of a young girl years earlier.

But here’s the thing: music is music, and none of these dramatic ideas served as more than an initiating impulse. Just as Beethoven once said that the metronome markings in his scores were only valid for the first few bars, the narrative inspiration for each of these movements only proved to be valid for the first few bars. Writing this piece for her and these players gave me a sense of connection at a time of isolation.

At the core of the Sextet is a tension inspired by Schumann’s two alter egos: Florestan, fiery and explosive, and Eusebius, reflective and ruminative. In the pandemic, I felt those two sides of myself more acutely than ever — energy wanting to be dissipated meeting mandatory silence.

The first Allegro bubbles with Florestan’s passion: repeated notes, symmetrical harmonies, and an irresistible forward drive. It is directly inspired by Schumann’s Toccata, reimagined in a modern idiom that transforms its relentless energy into my own language.

The Andante is Eusebius's answer: soft, balanced, and restrained. In its bass line it alludes to Bach's slow movement from Violin Concerto in A minor to ground the music with a kind of continuity and quiet interchanges throughout centuries.

The third movement, Hocket, is like two movements wrapped in one. It begins as a quick, sparkling pattern of overlapping canons, like Florestan at his most unruly, to give way to a slow ghostly chorale where Eusebius is in charge. Harmonics, mutes, and fragile lines hover as if time has stopped, music timeless and frozen.

Finally, the Sextet culminates with a paraphrase of Schumann's scherzo from his Piano Quintet. It seemed important to let Schumann himself join the dialogue, as he embodies the interchange between future and past, between Florestan and Eusebius. His scherzo becomes a seed for rhythmic play — syncopations and minimalist ostinatos that build to a jubilant conclusion where both voices are reconciled. Within two weeks I had read everything she had ever written and nearly everything written about her, but despite my compulsive reading habits, I still had more questions than answers.

I was struck by the universal themes of her story – how much her struggles, her questions, her passions, mirrored those of women throughout the 20th and 21st century. Spices delight the palate, but can cause illness; perfumes seduce, but can also betray; toxins bring ecstasy, but are deadly. The concerto combines Middle-Eastern drums, orchestral percussion, and rock drums with orchestral forces – a unique sound both enticing and dangerous.

Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! is a result of years of collaboration with PercaDu. While we were still students at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel-Aviv, Tomer and Adi asked me to write a piece for them. All three of us aimed at a piece that would be markedly Israeli and would reflect young Israeli culture. The process of composing the piece involved working closely with PercaDu on my ideas and testing them on the instruments long before the piece was done. In hindsight, I believe that the most important choice in making the piece sound Israeli was the use of four Darbukas and Tom-Toms in addition to the Marimbas. The piece, Udacrep Akubrad (PercaDu Darbuka spelled backwards) became one of PercaDu’s signature pieces and my most performed composition and is the basis for the first movement of the concerto.

Spices - the first movement draws its inspiration from the music of our region (extending its boundaries to the east as far as the Indian sub-continent). The piece is largely based on Middle-Eastern and Indian scales and uses the Indian system of Talas for rhythmic organization. I use these elements within a large-scale dramatic form and employ repetitive minimalism as it appears in the music traditions of the East and in the works of Western minimalists of the past forty years. Approximately at the movement’s golden section there is a cadenza that precurses the last movement of the concerto.

In Perfumes, the sonic world changes as one of the percussionists leaves the marimba and plays on a vibraphone. In Perfumes I use what I call multicultural polyphony. The opening theme of the movement (in the marimba) is reminiscent of Baroque arias. The three flutes that accompany the melody (regular, alto, and bass) echo the ornamental nature of the melody and transform it into lines characteristic of Middle-Eastern folk music. At the same time, the bass line borrows its sound from the world of Jazz. Each part of the texture contributes the “soul” of its genre, so to speak, in an effort to create a humanistic whole that express the diversity of our time and culture. As the movement progresses the soloists and orchestra embark on a colorful journey from the seductive to the dangerous.

In Toxins! the soloists use the entire variety of percussion instruments at their disposal. The movement is based on alternation between an aggressive rhythmic pattern (played on drumsets) and passionate outbursts in the orchestra. It swings like a pendulum between extreme joyous ecstasy and obsessive anxiety, pain, and delusions. As the movement develops, the music becomes increasingly fanatical until the final outburst of catharsis and death.

— Avner Dorman

for two pianos

Commissioned by Mashey Bernstein for Conor Hanick and Matthew Aucoin

The work takes its title, and the titles of each of its three movements, from the poetry of Ben Lerner.
1.
