Bridget is inspired by the dazzling, dizzy, perceptually playful paintings of the great British artist, Bridget Riley. I've long been fascinated by her work, and, in fact, she inspired an earlier piece of mine too, Bulb, back in 2006. In the interim, my appreciation of her work has only increased and deepened, due in no short measure to my reading her wonderful collection of writings, The Eye's Mind. In these writings, she talks of the way she plays with speed and tempo in her paintings, something she accomplishes purely by the use of repeating, accumulating images/patterns. A great example is her painting, Loss. I play with similar concerns in this piece for solo flute and multiples.
