Text
Miserere!
---
Miserere!
Thousands of voices And yet a thousand voices Cry out and lament: “Lord, have mercy upon us! Behold: Thousands, And yet thousands times over The trials of life do weigh us down, Tearing us apart with relentless force, The scourge of pain. And when we sink down And breathe our last With our last breath our last sigh: Now grown up Is another generation To the same tribulation, To the same distress... End, oh end the torment – Miserere, domine!” But unheard fades away The Heaven-assailing cry. Shines down unconcerned the sun, Life awakening. The fertile rain falls down, The seeds are sprouting, The trees are in blossom and bear their fruit, And harvest after harvest augments the torment ... From time to time only, Unexpected and as if with scorn, Bursting past with scattered thundering of hooves The apocalyptic riders.
